Iain started work life as a research scientist working in academic, corporate and healthcare settings. His PhD was looking at how brain cells grow, develop and specialise in new environments in vitro (plastic flasks). After working on the BBC Human Mind outreach programmes across the UK he studied science communication, which included the science of communication and learning. Iain quickly found that he far preferred being out of the lab using his knowledge and craft to unlock the growth, development and success in others.
Iain is passionate about people and fascinated by how people think and apply their thinking. This has become a lifelong pursuit for Iain. He has studied and applied neuroscience, communication and learning sciences in healthcare, academic, corporate, ‘start-up’ and ‘step-up’ enterprises, as well as third and fourth sector environments, for over 25 years. Iain now uses his considerable applied neuroscience experience to elevate client thinking – giving them insights, greater clarity, self-awareness and emotional confidence to overcome adversity and to achieve success.
Iain works regularly with high performing individuals, such as Paralympians and Olympians, entrepreneurs and business owners, those in the C-suite, to leads and teams in R&D and L&D. His client groups have included the BBC, NHS, STEM, Government Offices, pharma, corporates, to education and social transformation groups.
Iain creates and holds honest, supportive spaces for challenge, insight and growth. His coaching approach combines challenge with sensitivity, warmth and humour. Iain’s analytical scientist’s mind, together with his neuroscience expertise, helps clients to quickly spot and pin-point patterns in their thinking and behaviour so that they can (re)gain control of their own destiny.
Iain partners with his clients preferring to use an emergent coaching style where he can also offer supportive frameworks, models, metaphors and analogies to support and contextualise forward traction and momentum. By maintaining a solution focus throughout, Iain really invites his clients to be curious, optimistic and brave, which in turn energises strategic and effective client-owned action. Together this untaps and enables leaders and their teams to go beyond what they thought was possible.
Training and Group Facilitation Style
Iain brings his warm enthusiasm, infectious sense of fun and curiosity to groups making delegates feel part of shared learning experiences. This enables delegates to gain confidence and competence whilst still grappling with challenging topics. Iain likes most to work collaboratively with trainees to meet the real and applied needs in the room. He thrives in flexibly facilitating in the moment, using interactive demos, ‘hands on’ skills and shared feedback to glean deeper collaborative insights and shared rewards for teams.
Iain leads and facilitates using his prolific interest and experience in communication theory, neuroscience and public speaking to elevate and amplify thinking and voices to really powerful affect: “Iain really helps to bridge the links between science theories and the complexities of human life so fluidly”.
